And the reason this gets my goat slightly - the reason those unjustified comparisons irk me so much - is because I think Sniper Elite 5 is what you’d get if you went back in time and described a modern sandbox game (of which there aren’t that many which aren’t tainted by the open world RPG curse, but Hitman, MGS and Breath of the Wild are the most obvious examples) to a game developer from 2002.

It is basically the same game, except this time it’s set in France instead of Italy. I am sure that it will not shock anyone who has actually played one of Rebellion’s games to learn that, rather than being a Hitman or a Metal Gear Solid, Sniper Elite 5 is instead the next Sniper Elite game after Sniper Elite 4.

That Rebellion had massively, massively upped their game, investing a ton of money into hiring a team of crack designers to shape the emergent gameplay while throwing away the old, dated Sniper Elite engine and starting again from scratch to properly enable all of these modern sandbox features.Which sounds great, but unfortunately for Rebellion I have also played Sniper Elite 4, so I knew that one of two things had happened here:

This goading was not caused by anything Sniper Elite 5 did itself - at least not directly - but prior to playing it I read multiple reviews that favourably compared this iteration of the series to Hitman 2 and Metal Gear Solid V, two of the best sandbox games of the last decade 1. This game will generate a really great level of tension and excitement around the table.Okay, so I’ll state up front that I have been goaded into this review a little bit. I absolutely love the way designers David Thompson and Roger Tankersley handled this one… a tense and harrowing affair Punchboard Media It was very edge-of-your-seat… I would play it over and over again. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s extremely thematic! Tom Vasel, The Dice Tower Test your wits against this formidable opponent, and see if you can can claim a priceless victory for the Allies. The game also includes solo rules designed by Dávid Turczi and Noralie Lubbers, putting you in command of the sniper while your enemies are controlled by an AI deck. The defenders will have to use a mix of tactical planning and careful insight to track the sniper’s movements and outwit their bluffs using their miniatures to block paths, guard vulnerable areas, and Outnumbered but not outgunned, you must carefully manage your timing, as every shot you take and objective you complete gives the enemy more of the information they need to narrow down your position. One player takes the role of allied sniper Karl Fairburne, while up to three others control squads of German soldiers trying to strike a balance between defending their base and hunting Karl down.Īs the sniper, you will keep Karl’s location secret from the other players by tracking your movement on a secret hidden board as you stalk through the shadows towards your objectives. Designed by David Thompson and Roger Tankersley, Sniper Elite: The Board Game is a 1-4 player stealth action board game of pushing your luck and predicting your enemy. It’s 1943 and something is moving in the darkness.
